How to Successfully Launch on Product Hunt?

Set deadlines for the launch

According to several Product Hunt users, the best day to launch on Product Hunt is Tuesday and the best time is 12:01 am.

However, while deciding on the Product Hunt launch date, it is important to collaborate with the product team to get everyone’s feedback first. This will help you avoid postponing the date later or launching a product that is not ready.

Setting the product launch deadline will also allow you to set deadlines for the tasks that lead to, take place during, and after the launch. You can group these tasks accordingly to ensure you complete all of them in time.

Launching on Product Hunt

Do research about current trends for your niche. Also check the calendar to see if it is an American holiday or if another major launch may be going on at the same time. Launching on a busy day isn’t necessarily bad — it can mean that there is already activity on the site and your content may be seen. coda.io/@colleenmbrady/launching-on-product-hunt

The best day and time to launch your product

👉 Geography & Time zone - If you're targeting a global market, it's very important to take into account different time zones. Launching at a time that serves multiple regions can maximize your product's exposure and reach a broader audience. But if it's a specific region release, use the best possible active time of that region to launch.

👉 Weekdays or holidays? - Lots of people launch on holidays. I would even say most. Launching during weekdays may provide better visibility to professionals and businesses, and weekends can attract a broader range of users who have more leisure time to explore new products. It all boils down to the nature of your product. Is it business oriented or end consumer based?

👉 Morning vs afternoon vs evenings - Generally speaking, morning and evenings are the peak times. Afternoon is the dip, and only few people check their emails, messages during afternoon as they're settled into their workflows. So, if you ask me when I would launch my product? Morning it is! Well, launching in the morning allows for more extended exposure throughout the day, giving the product full day to generate buzz and traction.

150+ places to launch your product

There are lots of places to launch a product but not all are created equal. Figuring out what works best for your target customer / audience is key. There’s a lot that goes into launching a (software) product well: Storytelling, product readiness, community engagement, creating buzz, etc.

While there are common success factors across launches, a lot of what goes into a successful launch is highly dependent on the specific product and its target audience / customer.

How to pitch to tech publications

This is the moment when you can catch the attention of the news publication. As we previously mentioned, we receive up to 50+ press releases a day, so due to time constraints we will be filtering through your emails quickly to find the next big story.

Do’s

  • Tech media is competitive, so we often won’t report if the story has already been covered by another publication. Send out the news around 1 week in advance, or offer an exclusive.
  • Choose the publications/journalists you reach out to wisely, and craft a personalised email to each one, highlighting if they covered your startup or sector before.
  • Send out the news in the morning, rather than the afternoon. Think about the story/mission of the startup and the industry status, presenting the news in this context.
  • Make yourself stand out by showing numbers (if you’re early stage, focus on growth %), prominent names/stars that are somehow involved, as well as your social impact.
  • Try sending the press release yourself as the CEO of your company. Journalists sometimes prefer to talk directly to the source rather than to PR agencies.

How to get upvoted on HackerNews

Hacker News regularly publishes a dataset to Kaggle. As I looked at my posts go dying quickly down the “new” section, I wondered what was the relationship between score and how long the story was remaining in the visible portion of the “new” section, raising the probability of upvote.

In this article I look at correlations between the score and different attributes of the story:

  • posting date/time, showing indeed a relationship between published story rate and score
  • type of story (Show HN, …)
  • efficiency of reposting
  • class of topic (clustering story from the title only with NLP)
